EPA Architects and Urban Planning Atelier
Gürsel studied architecture at the State Academy of Fine Arts (DGSA) between 1957 and ‘62. In 1963, he was appointed as an assistant to DGSA’s Department of Architecture, Chair of Urbanism. In 1970, together with Nihat Güner and Mehmet Çubuk, he founded EPA (Etüd Planlama Araştırma) Architects and Urban Planning Atelier. Since 2011, Gürsel has been leading Atelier’s projects with architect Oya Erar. Gürsel is the recipient of the Turkish Association of Architects in Private Practice (TSMD) 1998-2000 4th Term Architecture Award for his professional work. Furthermore, in 2005, he was awarded with Aydın Doğan Foundation Urban Architecture Award and Arkitera Client Award for his Izmir Konak Square and Its Vicinity Arrangement project. In 2014, Gürsel received Mimar Sinan Grand Award by TMMOB Chamber of Architects. As part of the award program, he opened up an exhibition themed “Yer’e Ait” (Belonging to the Place). Also, in 2019, he was awarded with Cité de l’architecture, Global Award for Sustainable Architecture.
