Born in Istanbul, Şahinbaş graduated from Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture in 1961 and from the Royal Danish Academy in 1964. He worked at the architectural firm of Ahti Korhonen-Eric Krakstorm (Helsinki) in 1960 and at the architectural firm of Halldor Gunlogsson-Jorn Nielsen (Copenhagen) between 1961-65 after his graduation. During the same period, he took architectural design courses as an assistant to Professor Jorgen Bo for one year (1965) at the Royal Danish Academy, where he received his master's degree in 1964. In 1966, he returned to Turkey and taught architectural design as a lecturer at METU Faculty of Architecture until 1975. In 1968, he founded Erkut Şahinbaş Architecture. In 1992 and 1996, he won the Chamber of Architects National Architecture Award twice. Within the framework of the 2012/13th National Architecture Exhibition and Awards, he was awarded the Mimar Sinan Grand Prize by the Chamber of Architects.
