Muhlis Türkmen


(1923 – 2014)

Born in 1923, in İzmir, Türkmen graduated from the State Academy of Fine Arts with a master's degree in architecture in 1946. Upon his graduation he was appointed as an assistant in the same faculty. In 1955, Türkmen married M.Arch Nuran Türkmen (Aksis). Between 1957 and ‘58, he traveled to Brussels for the construction of the International Brussels Exhibition Turkish Pavilion. Between 1963 and ‘69, he worked at architecture and engineering schools both in Beşiktaş and Buca (İzmir). Between 1964 and ‘67, he was involved in the construction of the Lisbon Embassy. In 1969, Türkmen received his “Professor” title. Between 1982 and ‘90, he served as the head of the Interior Design and Interior Arrangement Departments at Mimar Sinan University. In 1988, he received TMMOB Chamber of Architects Awards in Building and Graphic Presentation categories. In 1989 and ‘90, he served as a member of the Culture and Tourism Ministry’s İstanbul Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Committee. In 1990, he announced his retirement. Between 1990 and 2003, Türkmen taught studio design courses at Mimar Sinan University. During his career of almost 60 years, Türkmen received numerous awards from the architectural competitions he participated in. He also pursued his private practice. Besides his professional and academic works, Türkmen also was a painter. Türkmen passed away on September 1st, 2014.
